Kindle Owners' Lending Library

Today, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) announced the launch of the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. With an Amazon Prime membership, Kindle owners can now choose from thousands of books to borrow for free - including over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers - as frequently as a book a month, with no due dates. No other e-reader or ebookstore offers such a service. With an annual Prime membership, the Kindle Owners' Lending Library is included at no additional cost. Millions of Prime members enjoy free two-day shipping, unlimited streaming of nearly 13,000 movies and TV shows, and now thousands of books to borrow for free with a Kindle.

"Owning a Kindle just got even better. Today, we're introducing a new Prime benefit built for Kindle: The Kindle Owners' Lending Library," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. "Prime Members now have exclusive access to a huge library of books to read on any Kindle device at no additional cost and with no due dates."

The Kindle Owners' Lending Library offers access to a wide array of categories and genres in fiction and non-fiction, and includes popular titles such as Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, The Big Short and Liars' Poker by Michael Lewis, TheHunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen --plus award-winning books such as The Finkler Question and Guns, Germs, and Steel, memoirs such as Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential, and motivational books like The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Just as with any other Kindle book, your notes, highlights and bookmarks in borrowed books will be saved, so you'll have them later if you purchase or re-borrow the book. Books are borrowed from a Kindle device, and customers can have one book out at a time. When customers want to borrow a new book, any borrowed book can easily be returned right from their device.

Titles in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library come from a range of publishers under a variety of terms. For the vast majority of titles, Amazon has reached agreement with publishers to include titles for a fixed fee. In some cases, Amazon is purchasing a title each time it is borrowed by a reader under standard wholesale terms as a no-risk trial to demonstrate to publishers the incremental growth and revenue opportunity that this new service presents.

"The Kindle Owners' Lending Library is a great new benefit for Kindle owners and an entirely new growth opportunity for authors and publishers," said Russ Grandinetti, Vice President, Kindle Content. "With the growth in Prime membership and the recent addition of Prime Instant Video, we've been able to broaden our relationships with movie and TV studios such as CBS, Fox, and NBCUniversal and significantly increase their revenue. We're excited to expand that investment to books - with this launch, we expect three immediate results: Kindle owners will read even more, publisher revenues will grow, and authors will see larger royalty checks."

Barnes and Noble Free Friday Book for October 28, 2011

Today’s Free Fridays selection, Blood Ties, is from Lori G. Armstrong’s Julie Collins mystery series.

Not about ebooks

Just thought I'd share Colbert's Super PAC media release:

Colbert Super PAC's Latest Ad Will Leave You Speechless, Then Speak For You

COURTSIDE, USA – Colbert Super PAC has decided to take its talents to a new TV ad about the ongoing NBA contract negotiations. The spot, entitled "Ball Gag," attacks NBA Commissar David Stern's "gag rule," which bars team owners like Mark Cuban from talking to press, friends, or even their own spouses.

The spot, the second in a planned quadrilogy, is made possible by a generous donation from Colbert Super PAC S.H.H., an independent nonprofit which does not reveal its benefactors' names, donation amount, or what (if any) NBA team they own.

"My beloved game of ball-in-hoop is in danger, and David Stern is throwing elbows, kneecapping team owners right in the mouth." said Stephen Colbert, President and MVP for Colbert Super PAC and Colbert Super PAC S.H.H. "You know who else supports Cuban censorship? Fidel Castro. It seems to me that Commissioner Stern needs to either grow a beard, or let owners speak their minds."

Tonight, Colbert will address this flagrant foul and then premiere the ad on his ESPY-anticipating show "The Colbert Report." The spot will then run tomorrow in an ad blitz that spans Texas from Dallas all the way to Fort Worth on WFAA Channel 8's "Good Morning Texas" – where all of Texas turns to find out how their morning will be. Those who wish to view it on a smaller screen with lower quality can find it online here.

Colbert Super PAC, also known as Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow, is an independent expenditure-only committee, and Colbert Super PAC S.H.H. is a 501(c)(4) group that protects donor anonymity. Although there have been persistent rumors that these groups have been acting as a front for Mark Cuban, I doubt you could prove it.

Essentials in Young Adult Books

(NASDAQ: AMZN)-- Amazon.com today announced Essentials in Young Adult Books, a new feature designed to offer teens and parents a selection of timeless fiction outside the classroom that young adult readers will enjoy. Essentials in Young Adult Books (www.amazon.com/youngadultessentials) will comprise two separate lists of ten books each: Editorial Essentials and Customer Selected Essentials.

"We're not sure which statement is truer: that teens can be insatiable readers or that they're hard to shop for," said Jessica Schein, Amazon.com Young Adult Books Specialist. "Our goal with Essentials in Young Adult Books is to help adults choose the best editorially curated must-have books for young adult readers. We also know that young adult readers rely on peer recommendations, and so we hope that the Customer Selected Essentials sparks a dialogue with our customers about the best books for that age group."

The Editorial Essentials list was compiled by Amazon Books Editors and will be revised regularly to remain relevant. Today, the Editorial Essential list is available for young adults or their parents and includes:

"Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson: Shunned by her peers, Melinda Sordino keeps quiet about the night in which everything changed. Will she ever rediscover her voice and tell the truth? "Speak" is an honestly-told, powerful look at the ways in which we cope with personal tragedy.
"Monster" by Walter Dean Myers: Steve Harmon is on trial for murder, but is he the menace the prosecutor paints him out to be or was he merely in the wrong place at the wrong time? At the heart of this riveting novel is a teenager caught up in an adult world - a situation to which many young adults can relate.
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry: This gripping dystopian novel published well before the current trend emerged centers on Jonas, a model member of the Community. As the next Receiver of Memory he is suddenly aware of his society's sacrifices for peace and predictability and begins to wonder what it's all worth.
"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" by Sherman Alexie: Disappointed with the schooling on his Indian Reservation and tired of being tormented for his physical problems, Arnold Spirit decides to attend an all-white high school and is immediately out of place. "Diary" is the humorous and honest story about one teenager's quest to do his best in the face of serious obstacles.
"The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak: Set against the backdrop of the impending WWII, "The Book Thief" is about Liesel Meminger, a curious girl who begins stealing books in her new town and along the way touches many - including Death - the unique narrator of this captivating novel.
"Will Grayson, Will Grayson" by John Green and David Levithan: Two different teenage boys; one same name. Such is the premise of "Will Grayson, Will Grayson",a funny, smart novel where the characters literally take to the stage to find out who they really are.
"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky: Charlie prefers observing over being observed in this must-read coming-of-age novel about the realizations that come with the firsts of high school - love, experimentation with drugs, losing friends, and generally trying out independence.
"Crank" by Ellen Hopkins: A gritty novel-in-verse about one girl's descent into a dangerous drug addiction and the consequences of seeking out another high.
"Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher: Clay Jenson is one of 13 people who receive a series of tapes by a classmate that reveal what led to her suicide. Brilliant, beautiful, and devastating, "Thirteen Reasons Why" explores the cost of how people treat one another.
"The Golden Compass" by Philip Pullman: Lyra Belacqua is suddenly in the middle of a world of intrigue that involves kidnappings, something called intercision, and a plan to undo the very foundations of her realm. After arriving in the Arctic Circle, she finds that she is the key to saving not just her parallel universe but our own as well in this exhilarating and spellbinding fantasy novel.

Starting today, Amazon.com customers can submit their votes for Customer Selected Essentials in the Amazon.com Customer Selected Essential Books for Young Adults Sweepstakes. Customers can visit www.amazon.com/customeressentialsya to submit suggestions and enter the sweepstakes, and the books with the most votes will be announced on 8/15/2011.
