This article was the result of a really frustrating ten minutes of trying to get a book on to a child's ipod. Audible customer service wrote back to me, but by then I'd figured it out. They were nice though.

Comparing Audible.com and iTunes for Audiobooks

If I'm in a hurry, I use iTunes because Audible is so time consuming, all to save a few bucks. The enhanced audio sounds really good, but I tried to put it on an older ipod for a child and I had to drop down to a lesser quality to make it work. This article has screen shots showing the differences.

Comparing Audible.com and iTunes for Audiobooks

Podcast Review: Slate's Weekly Poetry is Free Enlightenment

I feel really smart whenever I listen to this podcast. Robert Pinsky makes me want to learn more from poetry. With enough hard thinking, poetry can make sense.

Convert Free Google Books Into Amazon Kindle eBooks

I love Linux and believe in it, but Calibre is a lot easier for Windows. I tried it on my ubuntu machine and I just got frustrated. Understanding Linux as an end-user and understanding it as a creative user (creative in the truest sense of creating) are two different experiences. I've only successfully had one.

Convert Free Google Books Into Amazon Kindle eBooks

Calibre is a free program that converts files into ereader friendly formats. There are also a few easy methods of getting ebooks from Calibre to Kindles. In the rock-paper-scissors game of ereaders, Kindle is the rock. Most people choose rock – and Kindle – because they are generally the winners.

Podcast Review: "The Blessing Bee" by Shalom Auslander

I liked this story until I read it in print, and then the pettiness sunk in and diminished it a bit. It's better to just not think about it too much when you are listening.

Podcast Review: "The Blessing Bee" by Shalom Auslander

"Some kids have all the luck," Shalom says...after a classmate's father dies. He decides to save his own family from his dad by praising and insulting God.

eBook Review: My Booky Wook by Russell Brand

This is possibly the best autobiography I've ever read. I don't even care how much (if any of it) is true. Russell Brand is like Robert Lovelace come to life.

eBook Review: My Booky Wook by Russell Brand

This autobiography goes beyond a comedian's memoir about his various addictions. This is a libertine's celebration of himself, and it is beautifully done.

Audiobook Review: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

I love Thomas More (the Saint and the character) so the only thing that stings about this audiobook is that Thomas More is overly evilized, not unlike how Faramir was made more evil Peter Jackson's versions of Lord of the Rings. In Wolf Hall itself, More is treated okay, or at least I read it that way. I know there are multiple views there.

I was quite proud of the image I made for this article, blending Cromwell and my iTouch.

Audiobook Review: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

Simon Slater's performance brings Thomas Cromwell out of history and into humanity. Follow the audio while reading the ebook to indulge in Mantel's magic.

Podcast Fiction Review: Small Fish, Smaller Pond by Nick Hornby

Nick Hornby has such talent. I wish this was a full book, just so the silliness could go on. It was originally part of a McSweeney's collection, and I love everything McSweeneys.

Podcast Fiction Review: Small Fish, Smaller Pond by Nick Hornby

Stefan's country is small. His mother is President, and her prime duty is to go to a meeting once a month. At least they have a soccer team.

Podcast Review: Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" by A. M. Homes

I love Shirley Jackson. I was offended on her behalf that Just an Ordinary Day got lukewarm reviews, because it includes "The Possibility of Evil", which next to "The Lottery" is Jackson's best.

Podcast Review: Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" by A. M. Homes

The New Yorker Audio presents a creepy story made creepier by the reasonable tones of a gentle reader. "The Luck of the Draw" is 32 minutes of fascination.
